Optical transmission windows are specific wavelength ranges where light travels through fiber with minimal attenuation (signal loss) and dispersion (distortion). Bandwidth refers to the capacity of a fiber optic cable to transmit data — much like the width of a highway determines how many vehicles can pass through at once. Each window is centered on the typical operational wavelength, as sh wn in Table 1. With the RP Fiber Power software, one can investigate many details of fiber-optics telecom systems — for example, signal distortions due to chromatic dispersion and fiber nonlinearities (see a demo case).
