Outer Sheath: The outermost layer of the OPGW cable is a protective sheath made of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This sheath shields the cable from environmental factors such as moisture, UV radiation, and abrasion. OPGW is mainly applied in communication line of newly constructed high voltage transmit electricity system with 35 KV or above, or replacement of existing ground wire of previous overhead high voltage transmit electricity system, adding of communication lines and conduction of short-circuit current. It combines the functions of a grounding wire and a fiber optic cable, providing both electrical protection and telecommunications capabilities.
