As an important part of fiber-optic communication, an optical module is a photoelectric converter which converts electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa. The optical module, known as Optical Transceiver in English, is a general term for various module categories, including optical receiver modules, optical transmitter modules, optical transceiver modules, and optical forwarding modules. In addition to independent devices such as switches and routers, optical modules can also work on network adapters (commonly known as network cards). The optical module serves as a crucial component in optical fiber communication systems, operating at the physical layer, which is the lowest layer in the OSI model.
